Joe Joyce has swapped punching for painting and wants his lion-inspired artwork to help Team GB roar.

Putney fighter Joyce boxed his way to super-heavyweight silver in Rio and toppled Daniel Dubois in his latest professional bout in November.

Joyce has never been beaten in his 12 professional fights and holds the British, Commonwealth, European, WBC Silver, and WBO International heavyweight titles after sparkling against ‘Triple D’ under the Westminster lights.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist is also a keen artist away from the ring, studying Fine Art at Middlesex University before his punching promise took his career in a different direction.

Joyce has been commissioned by Purplebricks – the official estate agent of Team GB – to create a unique piece of artwork ahead of the Olympic Games and hopes this year’s stars can follow in his glittering Games footsteps.

“When you see people paint a picture or create something, they leave a bit of themselves in what they produce,” said the 35-year-old, whose artwork is part of Purplebricks’ ‘Home Support’ campaign which champions the importance of the nation getting behind Team GB in Tokyo.

“It can explain their personality, or their interests or the direction they’re going in in life, or to use art as a way of bringing up a subject matter.

“The similarities in sport and art, it’s the discipline and the dedication. You have to practice hard in both and push the boundaries of what you can do.

“It’s a great honour to be chosen to produce work in the build-up to the Olympics. It’s a pleasure to hone my skills again and come up with something that is going to inspire athletes.

“The ‘Home Support’ campaign is an excellent idea. It’s key in bringing some support from home. It really gives you something to look at, as an athlete, to motivate you and give you some support from home. You can take that encouragement and aim for gold.

“It’s amazing to be a part of the campaign, they’ve really pulled out all the stops to bring me in and give me the ability to give back to the Olympians that are coming up.

“Hopefully I can help inspire the athletes to win gold.”

Purplebricks is encouraging people to keep the home fires of support burning with the intensity of London 2012.

The UK’s largest estate agent have commissioned Joyce, former triathlete Vanessa Raw and mouth artist Henry Fraser to create unique pieces of artwork ahead of this summer.

The three artists were all chosen because of their roles as elite sportspeople and their ability to create eye-catching works that epitomise the spirit of British support.

Four-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny is one of the faces of the campaign and Joyce, also crowned 2015 European Games champion, was a crucial member of Team GB alongside her five years ago.

Joyce has vivid memories of his Brazilian odyssey and knows the importance of home support is amplified even further this summer.

“I remember from my Olympic experience, it’s a whole exciting thing,” added Joyce, whose finished artwork will later be made available to the public and will feature on limited edition prints and Purplebricks For Sale sign boards up and down the country.

“Home support will be more important this summer because there may not be crowds. You’re in another country, so it’s great to have that pride and home support to really make you more comfortable in the village and to perform at your best.

“I look forward to seeing my art on sales boards and limited edition posters. I hope the people who see it will know they’re being supported from back home and feel inspired to push that little bit harder.”
